If I understand correctly, the Maltese courts, after due verification, accept divorce papers originating from countries abroad. With this divorce decree Maltese law, then, permits a divorced person to freely remarry in Malta. In the absence of a clear answer from elsewhere I would like to ask a question to readers: “Has the Maltese legislator (Parliament) the power to enact legislation that would make it illegal for a Maltese person duly married in Malta but divorced abroad to remarry in Malta?” Perhaps those with a legal background can answer better.

As a final point of clarification, this letter is not for or against divorce, but merely seeking understanding on a legal point.
