One can understand why some Nationalist Party activists and supporters, who, for the last 25 years, grew up with and enjoyed the political party favours mentality, are now extremely concerned that this run of unfair and unjust way of doing things might – and I sincerely hope it will – come to end.

I look forward to the day when all families and their children are treated equally and fairly and when all opportunities are afforded according to one’s capabilities and not to the ones who are ‘on the list’ or according to the colour of the political party they support.

Since I returned to Malta some 20 years ago, in each general election I have always voted for the winning party simply because I firmly believed at the time that it was the best for our country. Now I hope that, on this occasion, I will again be voting for the winning party, that is, Joseph Muscat’s, in the hope that change will be brought about where it is needed and steps are taken to eradicate the political apartheid system.

A political tribal mentality has been brought about by having the same party in power for such a long time.

I also believe that corruption under any government will, unfortunately, never cease completely. But I also believe that the recent spate of corruption allegations will come to an end. They have taken place under a government whose sole answer is to constantly deny responsibility. This is not only arrogant but takes the nation for granted.

Malta should be grateful to Saviour Balzan for his investigative journalism because it was his newspaper that revealed the alleged corruption.

We must never forget that the scandals mentioned above were not discovered by the police or by government officials, who are getting paid to make sure that such acts of corruption do not take place, but by someone who is totally independent of the political party system.
