I refer to the statement made by government whip David Agius who was reported declaring he had voted against the introduction of divorce during the non-binding referendum but has now recanted as he says he will be respecting the will of the majority. The result of the referendum is clear. Only 53 per cent of three-quarters of the electorate declared they are in favour of divorce. These pro-divorce voters reflect 40 per cent of the electorate. Hence, there was never a majority of the electorate in favour of divorce.

Members of Parliament are elected to act as leaders and are not expected to be led by the whims of the great masses.

Those who had declared themselves against the introduction of divorce should stand by their conviction and not act as opportunists.
