Our political scenario has recently been hit by a major earth tremor after tension built up between the political tectonic blocks forming part of the GonziPN. The magma has reached an explosive temperature resulting in volcanic eruptions that have petrified the demigods forming part of the ruling clique.

The die is cast and judgement day is close and inevitable- Roderick Galdes MP (Labour), Qormi

Evidently, the recent outbursts did not come out of the blue but gradually gushed upwards to the crust after the recent declaration that one of the backbenchers had decided to desert the ruling majority. The ruling party no longer enjoys a parliamentary majority, leading to political shakiness and bringing the government to a standstill.

What led or who is to blame for this impasse? Is it the blackmail by one of the backbenchers mentioned by the Prime Minister and his acolytes or precisely his style of governance and lack of effective leadership? This legislature was characterised by continuous bickering and disgruntlement expressed by various backbenchers and main exponents of GonziPN.

Public outcries were becoming more frequent and vociferous, endorsing the discord between the elite clique and those who felt they were being left out in the cold. Some unintelligible and unpopular decisions brought discontent among the Maltese, raising the eyebrows of those who felt they are not gullible and do not give unconditional support but should express their dissent publicly. This dissent goes further than the mere reshuffle issue. It is the tip of the iceberg.

The matter became far more complicated when lately Lawrence Gonzi and Franco Debono became the diametrically opposing poles of the GonziPN sphere. Convergence points seem to have melted away. Recent public statements from both sides have moulded fate.

From now on, personal emotions and hysteria will override dispassionate attempts to converge. On one side there are those who feel that in this delicate moment they should stand up to be counted and show their unconditional support for their leader and on the other side there are those who claim that implementing fundamental democratic reforms is urgent and supersedes any other consideration.

Within the coming days the loyal crowd shall be jubilantly chanting “Gonzi! Gonzi!” The louder the chants, the deeper they are digging their own grave. Playing for time and being rhetorical shall console the party faithful and give the impression that they have the magic wand to overcome this impasse.

For how long can they prolong this sticky patch? It is futile to blame all their fiascos and inefficiency on the economic crisis and the PL. The lowering standard of living throughout recent years, high utility bills and lower purchasing power are definitely the daily horrendous experience of the vast majority. Maltese families have already been paying a high price.

The country is set to move away from inefficiency, fiascos, arrogance and an oligarchic form of governance.

The die is cast and judgement day is close and inevitable!
