I wish to refer readers to my letter Pensioners’ Injustice (September 25) where I stated that members of Parliament get their uncapped pension after only 10 years serving in Parliament. I have since been corrected and informed that they are entitled to their pension after only four years of service.

Now we have just been informed that civil service employees are in for a wage increase with arrears. I have nothing against this increase but this will be pushing us pensioners further back in our position in society and quality of life as this increase will not be reflected in our pension. Some unions refuse to sign the agreement because they have pending claims. The Malta Union of Teachers will not sign as a show of solidarity with the other unions.

I cannot understand why the unions never show solidarity with the pensioners’ claim. In fact, I think that our claim should be on their agenda because if they fight for uncapped pensions they would be safeguarding their own members’ rights because they will all be pensioners sooner or later.
