The human tragedy of illegal immigration has been haunting our country for years. What started off as a trickle of asylum seekers swelled into an ever- increasing number of people seeking a better life, away from their countries and families.

For as long as it has reached our shores, illegal immigration has been hotly debated. Attitudes vary from those who would rather push them all the way back to their war-torn or economically challenged countries, to those who offer and dedicate their entire human existence to supporting them and working relentlessly to see that their stay in our country is as dignified as possible.

New organisations sprouted over the last decade focusing on providing support to immigrant children with members offering their time to grant them the best quality of life possible as they settle in our country. They help provide them with food, clothing, money, education and medical care.

As it is a just and noble commitment, these NGOs rightly have access to public funds on the premise that they are indeed functioning and utilising such funds for the benefit of society.

This noble act stops short on retaining its coherence when it comes to certain NGOs who fail to defend the most vulnerable in our own society. In a recent press release made by Women’s Rights Foundation, foetal impairment was one of their arguments proposed for advocating the introduction of the deliberate termination of unborn human life.

Women who have unsafe abortions are not being offered an opportunity to understand their options by organisations consistently advocating abortion

Another NGO, Aditus, endorsed this proposal and claimed abortion to be a “human right” or “women’s right”. Both organisations also agree on the fact that there is a mortality rate among women who seek unsafe abortions and ultimately die because, according to them, the victims were negated their “right” to terminate their pregnancy.

When tragedy hits our seas and hundreds upon hundreds of lives are lost at sea, some of us seem to care enough to show our solidarity with families hit by tragedy. When a woman dies by cause of an unsafe abortion, very little is said, probably because the statistics are not available for Malta.

Death in both scenarios is a symptom of underlying issues. Whether it is immigrants dying at sea or a woman dying in the hands of a grotesque abortionist, there must always be a consideration by the NGOs that the death of the victims was a direct or indirect consequence of a situation which either got out of hand or because the victim was promised an elusive freedom before the act itself.

In the case of illegal immigrants, when people are promised a prosperous future, they are bound to take risks and challenge every obstacle they may find in their path to gain access to that wealth or freedom. Little do they know that the illusive Garden of Eden does not exist, and that running away from the situation will not necessarily mean the end of the tunnel.

This illusive freedom is consistently being advertised by rackets raking in millions of dollars from the hands of those unfortunate “freedom seekers”.

Women who have unsafe abortions are in the same way, not being offered an opportunity to understand their options by the same organisations who are consistently advocating abortion as being the only viable solution. They are being systematically exploited and encouraged to carry on taking risks.

The underlying reason why the advocacy of abortion is happening is officially unknown. However, an educated guess would be that such organisations are benefiting financially from international organisations and public funding. It could be that these organisations are being led by persons who lack the foresight to deal with such situations or have a deep anguish within their own selves and would rather justify their own internal discord by establishing some form of legally acceptable immorality.

It could also be that such organisations are indeed being manipulated by those people who consider the responsibilities attached to bearing and raising a child as an unbearable burden. It could also be that promoting the legalisation of abortion is influenced by the lucrative advantages they can tap into.

Could they be considering funding their own pockets in the same way International Planned Parenthood Federation is doing when peddling the profitable business of abortion and the sale of foetal tissue?
