When visiting an office to talk to a person I realised immediately how the secretary who works in it was trying extremely hard to get her To-Do list done. I felt a big sadness in my heart for her. She was so stressed out! Our lives have become so hectic.

David Viscott said that “lists today are a way of trying to get through the day, because we are losing a sense of time”. He was 100 per cent right! Time was not created to be cut into 1,000 pieces. Nor was it created to desperately fulfil a never-ending list of errands. It was purposely brought into existence by the All-loving God so that we, by His grace, “mend ()our ways, heed … (God’s) appeal, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with (us)” (2 Cor 13:11).

In St Catherine of Siena’s view, time has been created so that we recognise that “every place is the right place, and every time is the right time” for serving God!

François de Fenelon, the Archbishop of Cambrai, France, in the late 1600s, wrote: “Spare time is pleasant. You can hardly find a better use for it than by renewing your strength through inward fellowship with God. You will learn the secret of spending intimate time with your Lord. Those who know the Lord well cannot resist turning to Him in every available moment”.

Can you and I resolutely follow Fenelon’s golden advice?
