Contrary to what many are claiming, it is us, the people, who are to blame for the heinous murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Albert Einstein once said that “The world is a dangerous place to live, not because of the people who are evil but because of the people who don’t do anything about it”. Does this rubric not perfectly encapsulate the pathetic apathy of most people when confronted with corruption and criminal wrongdoing?

Most people are sorry little maggots, hiding in the darkness, only too happy to take risks as long as it is with other people’s lives and other people’s money. They hand out snippets of ‘advice’ liberally: “Don’t get involved”, “Don’t interfere” and, of course, the ubiquitous: “Let the world take its course.”

With this in mind, is it any wonder that Europe is going to the dogs, that we are being invaded by a medieval and barbaric culture and that a prominent journalist (the only one doing any real damage, one might add) was just assassinated with impunity?

This is because people - with their precious jobs and hobbies - are soft, hate conflict and believe they have too much to lose to get involved in things that really matter. In truth, they look down on anybody with a social conscience, considering them stupid for taking an interest in something that will not earn them money or ‘likes’ on Facebook.

Caruana Galizia warned people time and again about the blatant corruption within the incumbent government and how did the majority of people repay her efforts come election time? As Plato wrote: “The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”

A better world cannot be built by indifferent people and corrupt people are less of a problem than indifferent ones.

May Daphne rest in peace.
