John Mizzi (August 30) is entitled to his own opinions on the Maltese leaders of the past.

However, he should make a distinction between being pro-Maltese and against colonial oppression as opposed to being anti-British.

Furthermore, he fails to mention that Sir Ugo Mifsud died while defending Enrico Mizzi and his colleagues, trying unsuccessfully to avoid their deportation from Malta by the British colonial administration in 1942.

As to Joseph Muscat’s contribution (August 30), I certainly do not presume to be an expert on health matters. However, I base my statement, i.e. that the health service even after 1945 was inadequate, on actual documented facts.

I refer Prof. Muscat to a speech made in the Legislative Assembly by the Labour Minister of Health and Social Services, Antonio Schembri Adami, on March 21, 1949. In it he clearly shows how deficient the health services were under the British colonial administration and the great improvements registered under the first Labour government led by Sir Paul Boffa.
