An extravagant light show is set to illuminate the Granaries in Floriana on Saturday as the Australian Pink Floyd take to the stage.

The band, who is performing in Malta for the third time, is promising a bigger and better event than their 2005 sell-out concert at the Luxol Grounds in St Andrews.

“Every time we organise a tour, we ask ourselves how we can do things differently,” said bass player Colin Wilson at a press conference.

The two-and-a-half-hour show will be bolstered by new lasers, new lights and even more “jaw-dropping” video effects.

However, the most important element of the show remains the music.

“Music always comes first. We’ll be putting the Pink Floyd catalogue under the spotlight, breathing life into some material that would otherwise not get heard and ensuring that our audiences are just blown away by the show,” said Mr Wilson.

Keyboardist Jason Sawford said the track list would be a “mixture between the best known and less known material” of the British rock legends.

He also revealed the band will play a tribute to singer-songwriter and guitarist Syd Barrett, one of the founder members of Pink Floyd, who passed away in 2006.

Aussie Floyd formed 20 years ago and since then have sold around three million tickets in 35 countries.

They are currently on the road as part of the Exposed in the Light world tour and have already performed at sold-out concerts in Prague, Poland and Dublin, among other countries. The Malta gig will be followed by dates in France, Germany, Canada and the US.

Mr Wilson said the band has very fond memories of their first concert in Malta.

“All of us remember that concert as a special one. The atmosphere was simply amazing,” he said.

The tribute act returned to the island in 2007 to perform at the Jazz and Rock Festival, which was held at the Valletta Waterfront.

Over the years, the band made a couple of line-up changes “to improve the experience”, said Mr Wilson.

Joining them for Saturday’s concert will be Pink Floyd veteran singer Lorelei McBroom, who performed with the British rock legends on the Momentary Lapse of Reason and Delicate Sound of Thunder tours.

She also appeared in the videos for The Dogs of War, On The Turning Away and the Pink Floyd Live In Venice TV broadcast. On Saturday, she will be performing The Great Gig in the Sky which she had originally sung with Pink Floyd.

Meanwhile, the band has already launched another European tour for 2013.

Entitled Eclipsed by the Moon, the tour will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon.
