Film-maker and artist Jean Pierre Gatt is holding a solo photographic exhibition, Instrumental, at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina.

Curated by Sergio Muscat, Instrumental was born out of a personal love of music, coupled with an appreciation towards the forms and beauty of the instruments that are so often ignored. Using abstract photography, musical instruments are given a different aesthetic by photographing specific parts or details which are highlighted only through one source of light. The result is a series of shapes and graphical lines that make the instruments unrecognisable. Colour has been removed to keep the images minimal in appearance, making sure the focus is solely on the area of the instrument being captured. The aim is to challenge the viewer to guess what kind of instruments are being photographed. These images might be unconventional in their beauty as the final aim was to create a series of shapes and forms visualised through musical instruments, which is also how the name of this exhibition came to be.

Gatt has been working in the film and TV industry since 1993. His passion for cinematography has led him to be involved in a variety of documentaries, music videos and short and feature films for both local and international release. Through the years, he has also produced, co-produced and directed numerous music videos for award-winning artists.
