The funerals of former political icons Dom Mintoff and Censu Tabone, Malta’s participation at the London Olympics, brawling campers at Marsaxlokk and a turtle laying its eggs at Ġnejna are just a few of the photos featured in this year’s The Times Picture Annual.

Running into its seventh series, the annual features 150 photos ranging from news to people, arts and entertainment, sport and peculiar images of daily life around the islands, including several that have never been published.

The book features images by The Times’ photographers Jason Borg, Matthew Mirabelli, Chris Sant Fournier, Paul Spiteri Lucas, Mark Zammit Cordina and Darrin Zammit Lupi, as well as a number of local freelancers and international news pictures by the Reuters and AFP agencies.

In the book’s foreword, former The Times editor Victor Aquilina writes about the rise and fall of photographic giant Kodak, whose photographic film business crumbled in the face of evolving digital technology.

Published by Allied Publications, the book, the seventh in the series, is a selection of the best pictures shot for The Times and The Sunday Times covering the period between November 11, 2011, and November 10, 2012.

Last Friday, the 2011 edition won second place in the non-fiction category at the 2012 National Book Awards.

The annual, edited by Mr Zammit Lupi and designed by Mediamaker, is available from Word for Word, Castille Place, Valletta, and all leading bookshops.
