MADC’s production of Jay Presson Allen’s adaptation of Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is taking place this weekend and on October 14, 15 and 16 in Msida.
Jean Brodie (played by Julia Calvert) is an eccentric, egocentric and charismatic teacher in an all-girls school in Edinburgh. It is the 1930s and Miss Brodie believes she has entered her prime. This perception influences her teaching, which becomes all the more idiosyncratic and personal. She ignores the standard curriculum and teaches her students about art, culture and politics in line with her own proclivities. She has her chosen set of students, known as The Brodie Set, who she manipulates and brainwashes into following all her ideologies instead of those of the school.
The play also follows the journey of her sensual love life and finally the serious consequences of her actions on her students.
Directed by Chiara Hyzler, the play also features Ninette Micallef, Katherine Brown, Michael Mangion, Stefan Farrugia, Jonathan Dunn, Jasmine Farrugia, Taryn Mamo Cefai, Sandie von Brockdorff and Kyra Lautier.
■ The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is being staged at Blue Box at MSpace in Msida on October 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 8pm. It is suitable for those aged 14 and over. For more information or tickets, visit www.bluebox.com.mt.
