Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has appealed for the electoral campaign to start in the new year so as to avoid the Christmas period. However, he was warned months ago that unless Austin Gatt resigned from the Cabinet, the Budget would not pass.

Since February, the Prime Minister had been frequently urged to call an election by most of the social partners and the media. He decided to ignore such calls.

So if the Budget is defeated tomorrow, Gonzi should not criticise any other party for having an electoral campaign at Christmas. He should just say mea culpa.
