Alternattiva Demokratika yesterday slammed the Ornis Committee chairman for proposing a spring hunting period for turtle dove and quail and accused him of simply following the government’s aim to appease the hunting lobby.

“Both the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party should clearly and unequivocally declare if they agree that hunting should be stopped in spring, as clearly stated in the Birds Directive and as demanded by AD, Birdlife and environmental NGOs,” AD chairman Michael Briguglio said.

AD, which fully supports Birdlife’s call for the resignation of the Ornis chairman Louis Cilia, said it was considering referring the matter to EU Environment Commissioner to ensure Malta was brought in line with the Birds Directive obligations.
