The New Choral Singers, under the direction of Robert Calleja, will be presenting a concert of sacred music at the church dedicated to St Bartholomew in Għargħur on April 28 at 7.30 p.m.

This concert forms part of the events being held to celebrate the 275th anniversary of the consecration of the parish church by Archbishop Alfaran de Bussan on April 22, 1736.

Following Holy Week and the solemn compositions that areassociated with this period of the year, the programme for this concert has been arranged to include a range of compositions from different eras dating back to the 16thcentury through to the works of contemporary composers.

The programme includes the Ave Maria and O Magnum Mysterium by the Renaissance composer Tomás Luis de Victoria, Bach’s evergreenJesu, joy of man’s desiring,Reinmann’s Regina Coeli from the classical era, and excerpts from the Missa Benedicamus Domino penned in by the 19th century Italian composer Lorenzo Perosi.

Contemporary compositions include The Lord is my shepherd penned by Howard Goodall, You are the peace of all things calm by the British composer Geoffrey Knobes, as well as a number of uplifting Spirituals. For this event the choir willbe accompanied by pianist Shirley Helleur.

The concert is being held in aid of the restoration fund of the Għargħur parish church. While admittance to the concert is free of charge, a retiring collection will be held in aid of this worthy cause. More information about the choir is available at www.thenewchoralsingers.com.
