The Prime Minister yesterday told Nationalist MP Marthese Portelli that in five of the six occasions that he and Mrs Muscat went abroad on official visits, they were accompanied by their twin daughters and they had paid for these tickets out of their own pockets.

Joseph Muscat said that between March 2013 and last October, his wife accompanied him for the inauguration of Pope Francis, an audience with the pontiff, the UN General Assembly 2013 and a visit to the Maltese community in San Francisco, an official visit to Israel and Palestine, an official visit to China and to this year’s edition of the UN General Assembly.

In total, his and Mrs Muscat’s air fares cost the Exchequer just over €12,000.
