Ever wondered how Superman, also known as the Man of Steel, inspired science and popular culture?
A panel of film buffs, researchers and scientists are getting ready to explain just that at an event being organised by Science is Culture, in conjunction with Euro Media Forum and Eden Cinemas, to celebrate the Man of Steel Malta premiere at the cinemas.
The taglines tell us he is faster than a speeding bullet; more powerful than a locomotive; and he’s able to leap across tall buildings in a single bound.
For 75 years, Superman has enthralled audiences with his incredible powers of flight, super strength, X-ray vision and super speed powers. But just how much science fact is there behind these super powers?
Scientist David Pace and sci-fi film researcher Justin Camilleri will provide insight into the real-life science of Superman’s powers and how he is part of popular culture.
Members of the audience will learn how the Man of Steel has had an amazing influence on the teaching of important scientific principles, and how gravity and X-rays might apply to a real-life Superman.
The speakers will explain how Superman’s amazing powers are being reborn in laboratories around the world; from X-ray vision at airport security checks, to bulletproof vests five times stronger than steel.
There will be a debate after the presentations and the audience is invited to participate by putting forward their questions, curiosities and observations to the panel.
To spice up the evening there will also be a Superman film quiz, with the opportunity to win prizes.
The event is being held tomorrow at 6.30pm at Europe House, 254, St Paul Street, Valletta. Entrance is free.
Man of Steel will premier at the Eden Cinemas, St Julian’s, on Friday. For bookings, e-mail euromediaforum@gmail.com.
