Maltese spent €254.2 million, or about €133 per person per night, when travelling abroad in the first three-quarters of the year, official statistics show.
The National Statistics Office said Maltese made 39,076 trips abroad in September, up 4.6 per cent over the previous year.
The majority of the trips, 33,329, were made to EU countries with Italy and the UK remaining the most popular destinations.
The majority of travellers, 59 per cent, were men and most of those travelling fell within the 25 to 44 age bracket.
The number of same-day visitors was estimated at 4,852, marking a drop of 11 per cent compared with 2011.
