Is student politics important or not?

Student representation is essential in a university environment because it is these students who will eventually be involved on a national scale. Sharon Zammit, 20, BSc Pharmaceutical Science (Hons).

Student politics is a vital part of university life, and it’s healthy to know and understand how the political side of the student body is evolving. I also find that student politics often serves as a good exercise to motivate students to understand what it means to vote in a democratic society. However, I do feel that more often than not, some students treat these elections as though they are popularity contests and lose sight of what or who they are really voting for. Alessia Caruana, 20, BA (Hons) History of Art.

Yes it is. Student politics is a means whereby youths and students can express their ideas, opinions and concerns about what is happening at university. But student politics in Malta needs to be revamped to truly represent the student body. The two-party mentality needs to be eliminated. Students should vote for competent, skilled people, not simply one party or another. Christopher Scicluna, 21, BA (Hons) Philosophy.

Did you vote in last Thursday’s election? What did you base your vote on?

Yes I did. Being part of the University, I think it is not only our right but also our duty and responsibility to be active students and be involved in such a decision that ultimately affects us. I based my vote on the candidates’ personality, capabilities and experience. Sharon Zammit

Yes I did, and I based my vote on who had the most promising manifesto with proposals that seemed achievable, practical and beneficial to all faculties on campus. Alessia Caruana

Yes. It’s every student’s duty to do so. Irrespective of one party or another, I voted for those individuals who are capable of bringing the University Students’ Council (KSU) closer to the students and more effective in expressing students’ concerns and ideas. Christopher Scicluna

What are the main issues the new KSU should be concerned with?

It should be more student-focused, addressing issues of utmost importance like parking. Sharon Zammit

I believe that with V18 approaching, more importance should be given to cultural activities and direct student involvement in raising awareness about Malta’s history and its ever-changing present. Alessia Caruana

Apart from creating a healthy and pleasant environment on campus, KSU should invest its resources in more intellectual activities where all students (and not simply student organisations) can voice their ideas and opinions. Inclusivity is key if KSU wants to eliminate student apathy. University students are the future of Malta. They should be treated that way. Christopher Scicluna
