Wagner’s first masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman, also known as Der Fliegende Holländer, will be broadcast live from London’s Royal Opera House at the Eden Cinemas.

Exploring the theme of damnation and redemption, the opera was first staged in 1843 and proved to be immensely successful. It marked the beginning of Wagner’s career as one of the greatest operatic composers.

The atmospheric modern-dress staging directed by Tim Albery provides an ideal platform on which the bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will portray the turbulent Dutchman.

Intensifying the drama is Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who depicts Wagner’s visionary Senta.

Admired for his Wagner interpretations, conductor Andris Nelsons returns to steer the orchestra of the Royal Opera House through the original composer’s stormy score.

The acclaimed production delves deep into the psychology of Wagner’s cursed wanderer who is to sail the seas for eternity. Allowed ashore once every seven years to seek redemption, the Dutchman finds hope in his beloved Senta, a woman who longs for escape from her dreary life.

She accepts the Dutchman’s offer of marriage, but the Dutchman wrongly suspects her of unfaithfulness.

Thinking he’s protecting her, he leaves to resume his endless voyaging and Senta is left alone.

Known for its exhilarating score, The Flying Dutchman is a true celebration of music. Enhancing this experience is the amplified sound, together with dimmed lighting in Eden Cinemas’ multipurpose theatre.
