Kristina Chetcuti’s column entitled ‘No more homework’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, February 12) about the successful Finnish school system made me think about some irrational decisions taken by some schools in Malta.
For example, recently I have come to know that Form 4 students at a particular school had three exams in one day and nine exams in only four days.
If we truly value education, exams should be spaced out so that students, rather than learning everything by heart, have more time to better understand the subject and to enjoy asking questions about it.
In addition, the crammed exam schedule works against students who panic or lose concentration after two to three hours.
In addition, mental fatigue does not allow students to reach their full potential and all the hard work ends up lost in an hour or two.
