The article about a Catholic brother’s work with inmates at a Los Angeles jail (‘Catholic brother’s decade working with LA inmates’, The Sunday Times of Malta, March 9) is a real eye-opener to people who often criticise the Church.

Karmenu Duca is one of the thousands of religious people who work voluntarily and with integrity among the poorest of the poor.

They leave their families, their comforts, their home and country to dedicate their life to others, even putting their lifer in danger, as in the case of Brother Duca. I read his book about a year ago and I was left completely flabbergasted.

Unfortunately, in Malta, we also have people who keep harping on about the few bad priests who dishonoured their vocation and their Church while ignoring the good that is being done everywhere by our churchmen.

Coincidentally, on the same page of The Sunday Times of Malta there was an article about leprosy and the work of a local Catholic charity in fighting the disease worldwide.

Let’s be generous towards these poor people and send a little contribution to the Order of Charity, Catholic Institute, Floriana.
