At the request of the local parishioners, the village of Qrendi became an independent parish in the early 17th century, separating it from the Żurrieq parish.

The construction of the new parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commenced in the mid-17th century, however the local population soon outgrew the church and it was extensively remodelled and enlarged between 1685 and 1712.

Lorenzo Gafa was commissioned to undertake the design for the changes, managing to blend a new façade with the existing structure. The new central section projects from the older wings with the façade framed by giant order pilasters on either side, capped by a segmental arch pediment spanning over its entire width.

Breaking through the entablature is a large window buried into the pediment and above that a raised centrepiece, both designed to accentuate the height of the façade. The twin towers are both set back due to the restricted width of the façade placed at the end of the transept arms.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority scheduled the parish church as a Grade 1 monument on August 26 as per Government Notice 782.
