As a newcomer to Malta, I volunteered my services for the week-long 2nd Valletta Film Festival, which has just drawn to a close. I love movies and I thought it to be one way of integrating with the local community.

What an amazing experience! The organising committee and volunteers consisted not only of locals but also passionate movie fans from all over the world coming together to share their resources without a monetary reward and on a shoestring budget.

The international film selection was entertaining and sometimes intellectually challenging. Viewers were often forced to reconsider preconceived notions. The combination of interesting movies with the open-air venues in particular resulted in magical evening experiences. The movie categories provided something for everyone and the audience interaction with some of the actual directors and actors was the icing on the cake.

Of course, the real winner was Malta. I am certain the visiting audiences and celebrities came away with a wonderful impression of Malta and its people. The Valletta Film Festival is an example of soft power and the difference that a small group of hard-working people can make when they pool their dedication and resources to make something special happen.

I hope that some MPs and top business people attended a few screenings and took pride in what was achieved.

With continued official support and encouragement, the Valletta Film Festival will grow from strength to strength, and Malta will continue to punch above its weight in the international arts arena.
