For the third year in a row, Maltese DJ duo Tenishia has been ranked with the World’s Top 100 DJs in the DJ Mag poll. It may not be the first time a local artist has made it internationally, but to be ranked among the world’s best three years in a row is almost certainly a first, and Tenishia’s Joven Grech and Cyprian Cassar are understandably over the moon about it.

“Not many people would have thought that a small island like Malta could produce world-class talent, and we feel very proud to have achieved this, not only for ourselves but also for Malta,” they said in a comment.

The annual DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll is based on public voting, and it is estimated that around 35,000 DJs from around the planet compete for a place in this prestigious poll.

DJ Mag first started the list in 1999, and its top spot has been occupied by some of the best-known DJs, among them Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, Tiesto, David Guetta and Sasha.

The first time Tenishia ranked in the list was three years ago, when they had entered and placed 91st. Last year saw them reach their highest position to date, when they placed 50th in the wake of the release of their debut album Memory of a Dream, and their fantastic closing set on the trance stage at the Tomorrowland festival.

This year, they placed 65th, yet despite falling 15 places they are still happy with the result. “We managed to keep a good ranking in what has been a tough year, where we had to face new unexpected challenges,” they said of their latest position.

“Despite this being our busiest year so far, with performances in big festivals around the globe, the American scene left a big impact on the poll this year. The year also saw a big drop in trance music and an increase for big room and dirty Dutch house artists,” they explained.

Without a doubt, keeping their rank in the Top 100 this year, when other big names in trance dropped further down or are completely off the list, makes Tenishia’s ranking an achievement in itself. The duo added that they are very grateful for the undying support of both their local and international fanbase.

“We owe our success to them, and we make sure we let our fans know how important they are to us.”
