The last 10 licences out of the new 50 that were added after the taxi service sector was liberalised will be up for grabs come Monday.

Transport Malta said yesterday that interested parties could bid for the 10 licences between Monday and April 20.

The reform of the taxi service in 2010 saw 40 new licences being granted for the first time in nearly 50 years and the introduction of new standards within the taxis themselves.

New taxis are now equipped with a tracking device, a CCTV camera, emergency alarm buttons and tamper-proof meters.

The number of taxis in Gozo will remain fixed at 50.
