“The show must go on, and through Teatru Unplugged we will keep Nirvana’s memory alive.”
So said Jonathan Shaw in a statement, when asked if the event would still be held following the tragic loss of Nirvana Azzopardi less than two weeks ago.
The two of them founded the event back in 1998, since which time it has become an annual fixture on the national cultural calendar, one that is eagerly anticipated by many for the colourful mixture of music styles it brings to the Manoel Theatre’s prestigious stage. And given the positivity she radiated when she was till among us, as well as the equally positive overtones of her final message, carrying on is precisely what she would have wanted.
Now in its 16th edition, Teatru Unplugged has not lost any of its zeal, seeking to bring together established and upcoming artists for three consecutive nights of quality live music in what can only be described as a unique music showcase for Maltese artists.
Unique in style and format, Teatru Unplugged’s tried and tested formula will again present a variety of acts performing different music styles – a selection of rock, pop and classic tunes that tend to also get the audience involved as the show progresses.
The concept of staging different, yet short acts by seven solo artists or bands has proved very successful over the years, also because it keeps the event fast and moving.
And to make sure no one lags behind, Josef Bonello will be taking on the role of compère, adding a bit of spice that has come to be expected by Teatru Unplugged regulars.
This year’s line-up will include the delicate sounds of Stalko, the rocking voice of Chris Grech and the feel-good vibe of Gianluca.
Red Electrick and The Crowns will also perform, serving up their typically vibrant performances, while Rachel Fabri and Raquela will surely captivate the audience with their impeccable voices.
Teatru Unplugged will be held on December 6, 7 and 8 at the Manoel Theatre. Tickets cost €20, €15 and €10 and can be booked online.
