Last weekend, the top players from The Malta Polo Club faced each other in the ultimate match of the season with The Cawnpore Cup at stake.

This event, sponsored by Mdina Glass, Lacoste Noir by VJ Salamone and Gasan Mamo Insurance, is the highlight of the Malta Polo Club’s calendar.

This year’s contest proved to be an exciting spectacle of fast and competitive play between members of the club who boast the highest handicaps.

The crowd of polo enthusiasts and supporters were treated to a thrilling match, watching pro-ceedings from the clubhouse and Chukkas restaurant.

A display of classic cars from The Old Motors Club enriched the occasion while expert commentator Daniel de Petri Testaferrata provided a fluid and entertaining commentary throughout.

An exhilarating match, com-prising four chukkas, unfolded.

It was closely-fought till the very end, made even more so by the quality and skill demonstrated by the players and their ponies.

The final chukka commenced with Team Lacoste in the lead by only half-a-goal while Team Mdina Glass had nothing to lose and gave no quarter to the opposition.

Each side had near misses at goal as the seconds ticked away with Team Lacoste edging Team Mdina Glass by 3 goals to 2½.

Referees Karl Cassar and Mark Darmanin did a fine job in ensuring smooth, safe, and continuous play in this fast-paced match while George Lyttleton adjudicated as ‘third man’ umpire.

The most valued player award went to Chris Delia (Mdina Glass) for his superb team play and skilled defence.

Nautica (owner Kim Muscat) was voted best pony for astounding action in the final chukka.
