A man who was targeted in a bomb attack in Armier last year, and who faces charges of drug possession, was yesterday accused of breaching bail conditions when police caught him eating an ice cream outsidehis home.

The treat ended up costing Pierre Cremona a €700 fine.

The 40-year-old was meant to have been inside his Armier boathouse by no later than 8.30pm but he was found some 15 metres away enjoying an ice cream at 11.30pm on Sunday .

Mr Cremona was bailed after being accused of possession of cocaine that was not for his use, money laundering, illegal possession of two firearms, breaching bail and relapsing.

One of the conditions ordered him not to be out of the house later than 8.30pm but he was caught by police sergeant Allen Calleja who spotted him eating an ice cream, PS Calleja testified.

Testifying, Mr Cremona said he had gone to eat the ice cream because he needed to regulate his blood sugar levels because of a medical condition.

Police inspector Malcolm Bondin told Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras that this was not a serious breach of conditions but nonetheless it was a breach.

Defence lawyers Franco Debono and Veronique Dalli told the court that the breach was not serious and that the law did cater for such situations. They argued in favour of a fine.

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras fined him €700.

Last September, Mr Cremona was lucky to escape injury when a bomb outside a boathouse went off.

The device had been attached to a mobile phone.

Mr Cremona and William Farrugia, 31, from Qormi, escaped unhurt.

The two men reported that the blast occurred soon after they noticed a small box wired to a mobile phone in an unused oven on the terrace.

They said they took action as soon as they spotted the device and drove away just in time.
