I have just returned to Malta from the test match at Lord’s, flying back on Air Malta flight KM 117 from Gatwick.

The plane was full, boarding was carried out in a calm and orderly fashion, a tasty meal was served, the cabin staff were politeness personified and we even landed in Malta 15 minutes ahead of time.

All of this for a fare several euros lower than Ryanair’s – after you’ve added on all their prohibitive extra charges!

Air Malta has been serving our islands now for 39 years and this country would be a poorer place if it were ever to stop doing so.

Coincidentally, I also happened to be on Air Malta’s first flight on April 1, 1974.

We should be justly proud of our national airline.
