Almost half the charges issued to boat owners by the transport authority last year were related to speeding.

Speeding amounted to 47 per cent of the charges issued, Transport Malta said when launching its annual Safety at Sea campaign.

A total of 330 vessels were stopped and checked. Of these, 119 were found to be in breach of the law and charged and another 153 owners were warned. It said two more swimmer zones – Balluta bay and the beach below the seafront hotels in Qawra – had been added this year, bringing the number to 47.

Other initiatives include the installation of 40 speed marker buoys and four additional buoys to mark hazardous reefs at Marsalforn, Blue Lagoon, Ġnejna bay and Għallis Rock in Qawra.
