Ten girls from the ASA Malta synchro squad have participated in the Flanders Open Cup, held recently in Belgium.

They competed in three categories (solo, duet and team) against their peers from 11 other European teams.

In the competition for duets, Mya Azzopardi and Mikela Riolo had an outstanding performance, placing third in the routine.

Their ranking, however, was subsequently lowered to seventh place overall when points from the figure competition were added, this being due to the other teams’ greater experience.

The synchro girls also achieved a creditable fifth place and Azzopardi was 10th in the solo event.

The ASA said in a statement that the synchro team were classified ninth overall at the Open.

This was a commendable result, considering the strength, experience and tradition of the other participating countries in this particular sport, the ASA said.
