I have read a lot of hypocrital, bigoted and misinformed articles about recent events in Malta, which are enough to make one’s head spin, but I couldn’t believe what I read in Patrick Kavanagh’s letter (August 31). I would inform him that Malta is a “holiday island”, it has a hot climate and is not a monastery where people with outdated attitudes can retire to. At least, I hope it isn’t!
What, might I ask, is wrong with the human body? It is to be seen in every holiday destination in the civilised world. If his mind cannot accept that fact he should retire to some Middle Eastern country where people are covered up from head to toe.
I cannot help but wonder whether, in fact, some devious pleasure is to be obtained by his sitting in his “vantage point” and watching the procession of flesh? Grow up, Malta, you are supposed to be encouraging the holiday trade and foreign student business, which will not be attracted if one bans swimwear on the promenade.
Hopefully, we might even see a nudist beach in the future – I won’t be using it being in my 70s and not a pretty sight – but there is nothing to be ashamed of in celebrating the body that God gave us.
