Swieqi residents deserve better in terms of public order and public transport, Alternattiva Demokratika said yesterday.

Residents demand a 24-hour police station in the Swieqi area to serve the needs of Swieqi, Ibraġ, St Andrew’s and Madliena, AD spokesman Arnold Cassola told a news conference. Police should also carry out regular patrols around the clock.

“It is absurd that with the hordes of people – including minors – roaming the streets of this residential area at 3-4 a.m., screaming their hearts out and disturbing the public peace, no concrete action is taken by the authorities,” Prof. Cassola said.

AD also believes that hosting foreign students in unsupervised residences should be discouraged, he added.

Solange Sant Fournier, AD’s new candidate for Swieqi in the next elections, said the new Arriva bus service in the Swieqi-Ibraġ-St Andrew’s area has serious shortcomings, citing the loss of the direct hourly 64 bus to Valletta and the difficulty boarding buses to Sliema and Valletta from the main road.
