With reference to Paul Borg’s letter regarding the Swieqi civic centre and recreational area, an application for a development permit has been submitted to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and the project is intended to start once all the necessary permits are approved. It has to be pointed out that the works carried out so far were merely the digging of trial holes to establish the rock level. This procedure does not require a Mepa permit. Furthermore, the area is being regularly treated against rat infestation.
Moreover, it should be noted that this project, which is intended to spread over 2,300 square metres, will comprise a civic centre below street level and will include office spaces, a police station and a multi-purpose hall, among others. The communal facilities will be accessible from a recreational area at street level and will include spaces with soft landscaping, play equipment and a ground fountain. A reservoir is also being planned for the irrigation of all landscaped areas. Thus, the soft areas will provide a much needed green space within this community while also providing the locality with the civic amenities clustered in one place for the convenience of all Swieqi residents.
This development will therefore allow Swieqi residents to make use of the new communal facilities provided, without sacrificing the limited open green space within this area.
The project is being undertaken by the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs in collaboration with the Swieqi local council with a capital investment of over €800,000.
