Swieqi’s civic centre will start to be used by the end of next month after the necessary repairs are carried out, according to the Government.

The centre, which includes a police station and local council offices, was deemed unusable within days of it being inaugurated before the general election.

Damage was caused by water that seeped through the soffit, the Government said, adding that a lot of the work on the site was done shabbily and incompletely.

Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi held a meeting on site to ensure that work is sped up and finished as soon as possible. At the end of next month, the building will be devolved to the local council.

The ministry denied claims in sections of the press that the Government did not want to help the council and pointed out that it had no control of the problems that arose.
