2015-16 has been a memorable season for Swieqi Phoenix Volleyball Club as they finished top in the three youth categories organised by the Malta Volleyball Association.

Coach Leonard Zammit Munro managed to bring the best out of his young players who overcame the challenge offered by the other teams in the Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 categories.

The U-16 league turned out to be the most interesting with Fleur de Lys Twistees and Balzan Flyers Crosscraft doing their best to hold their own but Phoenix were superior in most of the matches.

Swieqi only lost one game, against second-placed Fleur de Lys, but only after they had wrapped up the title for the second year running.

In the Under-18 championship, everything was easier for the Swieqi girls who won all their matches to finish on a perfect record.

Fleur de Lys were expected to provide a stern challenge to the eventual champions but, after an encouraging start to the campaign, they faltered, with Balzan Flyers Crosscraft, led by Steve Farrugia, overtaking them into second position in the table midway through the season.

This was Swieqi Phoenix VC’s first league success at Under-18 level.

In the Under-14 championship, Swieqi made sure of their title victory after opening an unassailable lead over second-placed Balzan Flyers in a crucial phase of the season.

Balzan managed to inflict the only defeat on the Swieqi team in this category but the latter won the other two direct clashes to make sure of retaining the title for the second year running.

Paola finished third behind Balzan in the final standings of the U-14 league.
