Swedish pop artist Jei was in Malta earlier this summer, primarily to shoot a music video for her latest release, but also to find the time to write new material.

After several years working with other artists and bands, Jei, who was born in Ethiopia but raised in Sweden, has now embarked on a solo career, blending her soft yet intense vocal timbre with contemporary dance music elements to come up with a refreshing pop sound.

Tattoo is Jei’s debut solo release, the song resulting from lyrics that came to her at night during a dream in which her body was tattooed all over. “It was more of a nightmare really,” she said in a comment, “but I managed to make an up-tempo pop song out of it; it is a tribute to anyone who has a tattoo.”

She also feels strongly that there is more to pop than just music. “To me, pop music is so much more than just a beat to party and dance to. It has the ability to reach people with different backgrounds, religions and cultures all over the world in a way few other music genres do.”

Her biggest performance to date was as the opening act for Michael Jackson, performing in front of 80,000 people in Estonia.

Apart from her time as part of Cosmo4, she has enjoyed chart success in Sweden and was also involved in the Swedish selection for the 2007 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest.
