Small island states, including Malta, will set up a network of experts to promote sustainable energy solutions together.

This was decided at a two-day global summit, entitled Renewable Energy And Islands, in Malta yesterday.

The summit was organised by the International Renewable Energy Agency, an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to accelerating the adoption of renewable energy, especially among island states.

Those attending the meeting agreed to set up the network of experts that will assist states in exploring new technologies and opportunities that evolve as new technologies develop.

Resources Minister George Pullicino said the summit was highly successful, with more than 120 participants from more than 50 countries around the table of discussion. These included about 15 ministers.

Agency director general Adnan Amin said that, judging by the meetings he had with the Maltese delegation, he could say that the efforts being undertaken by Malta to increase its share of renewable energy were heading in the right direction, bearing in mind the island’s limitations.
