A 22-year-old security guard who admitted driving while drunk, injuring two people and damaging three cars was yesterday given a suspended jail term, fined €4,000 and banned from driving for six months.

After a discussion at the bench between Magistrate Anthony Vella, defence lawyer Albert Zerafa and Police Inspector Carol Fabri, the court banned publication of the name of the accused and of the company where he worked. No reason was given.

The incident happened in Birżebbuġa on Sunday at about 7pm. The accused crashed into a car but kept on going before smashing into another two stationary vehicles that had been involved in a bumper to bumper collision and the drivers were waiting for the local wardens.

When the police arrived, he assaulted the officers. He was arrested and a breathalyser test was carried out.

The Żejtun man pleaded guilty to slightly injuring Hoai Thuong Do Nguyen and Mark Anthony Bonello, causing involuntary damages to three cars and driving his Honda Civic dangerously, carelessly and at speed.

He also admitted to driving while under the influence of alcohol, violently resisting arrest, assaulting a policeman, being drunk to the extent he could not take care of himself and swearing in public.
