As celebrations reached a crescendo in Valletta yesterday and Malta’s new Prime Minister Joseph Muscat made his way up Republic Street, two brothers were being charged in court with taking their merriment too far the day before.

Stefan Briffa, 26, from Luqa and 34-year-old Antonio from Tarxien were stopped by the police as they tried to park their car on the War Memorial roundabout in Floriana.

Two women police constables were slightly injured during the incident, which happened at 2pm on Sunday.

The younger of the brothers, Stefan, was drunk at the wheel, the court heard.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale sentenced Stefan Briffa to a one-month suspended jail term, while he was barred from driving for six months. His brother received a one-week suspended jail term.
