Simon Giordmaina is continuing with his drag racing quest and it just keeps getting better. The Superbike quarter-mile ace, riding his 600hp Super Street Hayabusa Turbo, is aiming for a new objective – to test his skills against those of the world’s very best.

Giordmaina’s intuitive instinct and accuracy are helping to reach higher levels. Locally, he is considered a complete racing combination following his MDRA SuperStreet and Open Class titles between 2009-11. Twice he finished a creditable third at Germany’s Nitrolympx Hockenheim and was also European top rider in Santa Pod.

However, it’s on the other side of the Atlantic that Giordmaina is determined to further raise his profile in this sport.

In November 2012, Giordmaina invited US record holder and Pro Street champion Rodney Williford to take part in a drag racing event at Ħal-Far.

Williford accepted the invitation to test Giordmaina’s bike and clocked an impressive 7.53sec run at the Raceway.

After further talks, the two agreed that the Hayabusa was to be shipped to the US where Williford could perform further tests and fine-tuning before Giordmaina’s next runs.

According to the latest reports, the Hayabusa now seems to have settled quite nicely as tests were conducted at the Maryland Dragway under Williford’s supervision. A few minor changes were effected and goals have been established.

“Rodney has told us that the tests were okay,” Giordmaina said.

“The best times in practice were 7.27 and a 7.24... we are sure a 7.1 is in the bike as it stands.”

Funding will be an issue but Giordmaina will be travelling to the US later this year ahead of his participation in drag racing events in his bid to secure an entry at the World Finals.

Giordmaina is convinced that, relying on Williford’s expertise, the pre-set targets are achievable.

“We are on course to realise our dream,” he said.

“It’s certainly not an easy task but we are working hard to achieve further success. We are proud to be doing this in the US and in collaboration with Williford.

“I take this opportunity to show my appreciation to the Willifords for their support, my family for the patience and sheer dedication, the MDRA, KMS and Malta Motorsport Association.”

Putoline Lubricants, Linguatime and the Notebook Centre are Giordmaina’s sponsors.
