Pack your umbrellas and get your beach mats out again this weekend, as the sun will shine after a bout of erratic thunderstorms over the past few days.

“This year, the rains started quite early in the second half of August and last week was particularly volatile weather,” a meteorological office representative said.

In August, the Luqa Meteorological Office registered 26.4mm of rain. It did not rain at all in August last year.

September 2012 saw a total of 82.8mm of rain. In this first week of September, 31.2mm have already been registered.

“It’s very normal to have this kind of weather in September, although, having said that, this does not mean that floods have to be an annual appointment,” she said.

The thunderstorms that left Malta flooded in several parts on Thursday were caused by a low pressure area originating from Libya and Tunisia.

“But it could have been worse. Some storms bypassed us,” the met office representative said.

However, there is no need to pack your sandals away yet because summer seems to still be very much on the cards.

“In the next five days, it looks like there will be no inclement weather and the sea should be calming down,” she said, adding that it would still be very humid due to easterly winds.

Temperatures are forecast to vary between 30˚C and 31˚C, so people have one last spurt to enjoy the remaining days of summer.
