Stefan Sultana was yesterday appointed as the new coach of struggling Premier League side Ħamrun Spartans.

The appointment was made official yesterday evening during a meeting of the club’s committee.

Sultana, regarded as one of the best players in the history of Ħamrun Spartans and the all-time leading scorer of the Premier League, succeeds Jesmond Zammit who stood down after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Mqabba saw the team slip to second-from-bottom in the table.

For Sultana, who holds a prominent coaching role with the club’s nursery, this will be his first experience in charge of a Premier League side. Last season, he occupied the post of team manager of the senior team who, under Steve D’Amato, gained a place in the Championship Pool.

Sultana has a tough job on his hands to revive the Spartans’ fortunes and his first task will be to prepare the team for Friday’s match against Sliema Wanderers at the Tedesco Stadium.
