Colette Sultana added another accolade to her list of honours in her fledgling career when she got the better of three higher-ranked players last weekend to win the Welsh Junior Open in the Under-17 girls age group.

This must rank as Sultana’s most prestigious result in European ranking tournaments so far and reflects her continued improvement, following last year’s victory in the Irish Junior Open, and other titles achieved in previous years in Spain and Italy in younger age groups.

In the final, played in Cardiff yesterday, the Maltese junior champion came up against Scotland’s Elspeth Young.

The first two games were very balanced with Elspeth claiming the first 11-9 and Sultana responding to win the next 11-8.

The third game, which proved crucial, was even closer and went to a 10-10 tie. Sultana kept her nerve well to win the next two points and secure the game.

She then showed excellent form and outplayed her opponent to win the fourth game 11-5 and claim the title with a 3-1 scoreline.

Sultana is currently based in England, in the first year of her Sixth Form studies at Millfield School.

Her squash coaches at Millfield are former world champion Jonah Barrington and Ian Thomas.

She will be back in Malta in April to play for the Maltese national team in the European Team Champion-ships which will be staged at the Marsa Sports Club.
