Balzan FC’s association with the Sullivan family continued to blossom yesterday after the unveiling of a sponsorship agreement with Bet 90, a company managed by Simon Sullivan, grandson of the longest-living club player – Edward.

Last year, the Premier League club marked the career of Sullivan Snr who formed part of the first Balzan Youths team way back in the 1930s.

Yesterday, the 93-year-old was again present for the launching of the partnership with Bet 90 which also incorporates this season.

“Bet 90’s association with Balzan FC fills me with great satisfaction not just because we’re teaming up with one of the most organised clubs in the Premier League but because this club also hold special significance for my family,” Simon Sullivan told reporters.

“My grandfather Edward and his two brothers played for Balzan in the town’s very first team in 1937. They’re part of this club’s history and that makes this sponsorship deal even more special.

“We’re convinced that this agreement will help Balzan FC in their endeavours to again rank among the top four at the end of the season.”

Anton Tagliaferro, the Balzan FC president, said the team produced some excellent performances this season and their efforts are attracting the interest of potential sponsors like Bet 90.

“Our increasingly good reputation over the last few years is leaving a positive impact in all areas of the administration,” Tagliaferro said.

“Our senior team is doing very well in the league this season despite having two of our best players, Bojan Kaljevic and Ryan Fenech, out with injury. The team, however, is still fighting for the top positions.

“Added to that, our academy teams – the U-15s, the U-17s and the U-19s – are all playing in Section A in their respective championships and that’s another first for this club.

“These results are very encouraging and now we’re also optimistic that we will be announcing similar deals in the near future.”

With the January transfer window just four weeks away, Tagliaferro did not rule out additions to Oliver Spiteri’s squad.

“We’re always in continuous discussion with our coach Oliver Spiteri as regards the way forward to strengthen our squad,” Tagliaferro said.

“Much will depend on when we can have Bojan and Ryan available. If they’re fit for the start of the third round we may well remain with the same squad we have. If not, we will be forced to enter the market to make sure we have a competitive squad for the season run-in.”

At the end of the sponsorship launching, Tagliaferro unveiled a framed shirt, bearing the Edward Sullivan name and no.37, which will be hanging at the club’s main hall.
