Maltese synchro swimmers confirmed their significant progress in this sport when they recently won silver in the Duets and bronze in the team event during a competition in Belgium.

After their excellent performances in Slovakia in recent weeks, they participated in the Flanders Synchronised Swimming International competition, a LEN and FINA-approved European event which attracts high-level participation from the Under-13 girls.

Besides the team of 10 Maltese, there were competitors from the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, Switzerland and hosts, Belgium. These countries were represented by national and club teams.

Mya Azzopardi and Mikela Riolo impressed when they clinched the silver medal in the Duets, while Malta took bronze in the team competition.

Andria Friggieri, Vanessa Mairangas, Raissa Baldacchino, Pearl Calleja, Hayley Camilleri, Lisa Fenech, Ingrid Dijncharadze and Amy Grech, besides Azzopardi and Riolo, made up the Maltese squad.

Twelve-year-old Azzopardi, who incidentally holds two swimming junior records, also participated in the Solo event, finishing a very creditable fifth out of 11 strong and more experienced opponents.

Synchro Team Malta are coached with great dedication by Saho Harada and Anja Kuhn.
