A total of 81,911 foreign students attended English language courses at Maltese specialised schools last year, an 18.2 per cent rise over 2011.

Almost two-thirds came from Italy, Germany, Russia, France or Spain. Italians accounted for a 19.2 per cent share, while students from Germany and Russia made up 14.1 and 13.9 per cent respectively.

Most were 16 or 17, with 21,791 arrivals, or 26.6 per cent of the annual total. Those aged 50 or over made up the smallest proportion with 3,879 students.

July was the busiest month, with 23,628 (28.8 per cent) English language students arriving.

December was the least busy, with just over 1,000 arrivals. The average length of stay for 2012 was estimated at 2.8 weeks.
