Verdala students have managed to raise €1,220 in a campaign to help injured turtles be rehabilitated and released back into the wild.

The funds will go towards medication costs for the injured turtles and to help Nature Trust raise enough funds to set up the first wildlife rehabilitation centre in Malta at the Xrobb l-Għaġin Park.

The centre will cater for injured wildlife such as marine turtles, hedgehogs and bats.

It will increase the present capacity for turtles from 12 to 30 tanks, thus allowing more injured turtles to be rehabilitated at one time. Under Nature Trust’s plans, it will also serve as an emergency centre for wildlife in case of an oil spill.

Nature Trust executive president Vincent Attard commended the environmental commitment of the school, which also runs an environmental club called Project Earth.
